Chapter 2 - Patterns of gray matter loss in different manifestations of Alzheimer ’ s disease

چکیده
We assessed patterns of grey matter atrophy according to age-at-onset in a large sample of 215 AD patients and 129 controls with voxel-based morphometry using 3Tesla 3DT1 magnetic resonance imaging. Local grey matter amounts were compared between lateand early-onset AD patients and older and younger controls, taking into account the effect of APOE. Additionally, combined effects of age and diagnosis on volumes of hippocampus and precuneus were assessed. Compared to age-matched controls, late-onset AD patients exhibited atrophy of hippocampus, right temporal lobe and cerebellum, whereas early-onset AD patients showed GM atrophy in hippocampus, temporal lobes, precuneus, cingulate gyrus, and inferior frontal cortex. Direct comparisons between lateand early-onset AD revealed more pronounced atrophy of precuneus in early-onset AD patients and more severe atrophy in medial temporal lobe in late-onset AD patients. Age and diagnosis independently affected hippocampus; moreover, the interaction between age and diagnosis showed that precuneus atrophy was most prominent in early-onset AD. Our results suggest that patterns of atrophy may vary in the spectrum of AD.

Purpose: This study is designed to determine the sex differences in brain weight and volume of left hemisphere and its gray and white matters in right-handed normal subjects and the right-handed subjects which were suffered from Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. Materials and Methods: This study was performed on 72 normal human brains (38 male, 34 female), 11 brains suffered from Alzheimer (4 ...
متن کاملP156: Effect of Air Pollution on Alzheimer\'s Disease
Alzheimer, a chronic neurodegenerative disease, usually starts slowly and worsens gradually. It causes 60% to 70% of dementia cases. Difficulty in remembering recent events (short-term memory loss) is the most prominent early symptom. As the disease progresses, patients may have problems such as impaired language, disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, ...
متن کاملThe pattern of atrophy in familial Alzheimer disease
OBJECTIVE To assess regional patterns of gray and white matter atrophy in familial Alzheimer disease (FAD) mutation carriers. METHODS A total of 192 participants with volumetric T1-weighted MRI, genotyping, and clinical diagnosis were available from the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network. Of these, 69 were presymptomatic mutation carriers, 50 were symptomatic carriers (31 with Clinical De...
متن کاملTissue segmentation of the brain in Alzheimer disease.
PURPOSE To compare brain tissue in patients with Alzheimer disease with that in elderly control subjects by using high-resolution MR imaging and quantitative tissue-segmentation techniques. METHODS MR imaging of the brain was performed in 21 patients with Alzheimer disease and 17 control subjects. A computerized segmentation program was used to quantify volumes of ventricular and sulcal cereb...
متن کاملParenchymal CT correlates of senile dementia (Alzheimer disease): loss of gray-white matter discriminability.
Neuropathologic studies have defined gross anatomic (structural) as well as histologic (parenchymal) changes of senile dementia (Alzheimer disease). This investigation suggests that loss of gray-white matter discriminability by computed tomography (CT) is related to cognitive impairment in this disease. Discriminability is defined as the relative ease of visual differentiation between gray and ...
